Unlocking the Secrets Behind Painting Conservation and Restoration: A Journey of Art, Science, and Preservation

Have you ever wondered what it takes to bring a centuries-old painting or its delicate frame back to life? As a painting and frame conservator with 20 years of dedicated experience, I invite you to step behind the scenes of this fascinating craft—where art meets science and history is preserved with precision and passion.

Who I Am and What I Do
Since 2000, I have specialised exclusively in the conservation and restoration of paintings and their frames, working with everything from oil on canvas and historic wooden panels to copper supports and intricately gilded frames. Each artwork has its own story etched in layers of paint, varnish, and time—and my role is to respect and protect that story while carefully stabilizing and reviving its beauty.
My expertise is grounded in rigorous academic training with a Master’s degree in Fine Art Conservation (Easel Paintings) from Northumbria University, where I graduated with distinction, and a master’s degree in Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Lincoln. These credentials, combined with hands-on projects nationally and internationally, allow me to blend scientific analysis with traditional restoration craftsmanship to deliver conservation solutions tailored uniquely to each piece.

Why Painting  Conservation Matter
Paintings are fragile time capsules. Light, humidity, dust, old repairs, and even the handling of time can threaten their survival. Frames, often overlooked, are integral to protecting and presenting these artworks, with their own complexities of aging materials and finishes.
Conservation is about more than making art “look good.” It’s a meticulous process of revealing original colours hidden beneath years of dirt or yellowed, oxidised varnish, carefully repairing fragile paint layers, and reinforcing supports—all while ensuring every treatment respects the artist’s intent and the artwork’s historic integrity.

What Challenges Do I Solve?
In my work, I tackle a diverse range of issues, such as:
  • Flaking and cracked paint layers: Stabilized with precision adhesives to keep the delicate surface intact.
  • Surface grime and discoloured varnishes: Removed through carefully tested cleaning methods to bring back the artwork’s true palette.
  • Frame breakdowns: From loose joints to faded gilding, I revive the supporting architecture and decorative elements that frame and elevate the painting.
  • Legacy treatments: Identifying and reversing damaging past restorations using reversible, conservation-approved materials.
  • Environmental threats: Advising on ideal storage, display, and handling conditions to protect these treasures from humidity, light damage, and pollutants.
  • Every treatment begins with a detailed assessment and documentation, ensuring full transparency and long-term care continuity for each artwork.

Through this platform, I aim to share stories, insights, and the remarkable science behind painting and frame conservation—a world where history, chemistry, and artistry converge. Whether you are a collector, curator, artist, or simply fascinated by the survival of art through time, I invite you to discover how these priceless treasures are preserved with the highest standards of skill and care.
Have questions? Want to learn how your paintings or frames can be cared for? I look forward to connecting with you and sharing this captivating journey.
